King Price Race to the Sun is known for its flat, fast, and well-graded gravel routes. It’s the perfect race for anyone looking to test their speed and endurance. Whether you’re a beginner aiming for your first big milestone or chasing a personal best, this event offers a unique opportunity to tackle one of the fastest and most accessible 100-mile races in the country. With minimal elevation gain, smooth terrain, and a welcoming community of riders, it’s no surprise that cyclists of all levels return year after year to take on this challenge.
Rick Flemming’s story began with a simple decision: buying his son a bike for his birthday. What started as a way to bond with his child quickly turned into an inspiring journey of growth, determination, and a newfound love for cycling. In just over a year, Rick has transformed from a complete novice to taking on the 100-mile race at this year’s King Price Race to the Sun.
A Beginner’s Leap into Cycling
Rick’s cycling journey began in January 2024, and it’s a story that resonates with anyone who’s ever felt like they’re starting from scratch. “I’m new to the sport,” Rick admits. “It all started when my son turned five, and we decided to get him a bike. My wife suggested I get one too, so I could ride alongside him and help build his confidence.”
Little did Rick know, this decision would spark a passion for cycling. When his coworkers mentioned the King Price Race to the Sun, Rick was intrigued but unsure if he could even participate. “I called a bike shop and a coach to ask if I could use the bike I was planning to buy. They both laughed and said it [the bike] wouldn’t make it through the event—and neither would I!”
Undeterred, Rick invested in a dual-suspension bike, kit, and a coach. “It all happened very fast,” he recalls. “Before I knew it, I was training for my first King Price Race to the Sun.”
Doubling the Distance
In 2024, Rick completed the 50-mile King Price Race to the Sun, a significant milestone for someone who had just started cycling. But he didn’t stop there. In 2025, he’s stepping up to the 100-mile distance, a decision fueled by his growing love for the sport and a desire to push his limits.
“It’s been a journey,” Rick says. “After completing the 50-mile King Price Race to the Sun last year, I realised I wanted to push myself further. Stepping up to the 100-mile distance this year feels like the natural next step in my cycling journey. It’s not just about finishing the race anymore—it’s about challenging myself to see how far I can go.”
For Rick, the move from 50 to 100 miles isn’t just about physical endurance—it’s about mental resilience, time management, and the support of his loved ones. “The biggest challenge is balancing training with family, work, and life in general. It takes sacrifice, not just from me, but from everyone around me.”
Training for the Long Haul
Rick’s training for the 100-mile race is a far cry from his early days as a beginner. With the guidance of his coach, Theo Brits from Caracal XCC & Skills Park, Rick has embraced a structured approach to building endurance, strength, and race management.
“Time in the saddle has increased significantly,” Rick explains. “I’m focusing on skills, nutrition, and mental preparation. It’s not just about finishing the race anymore—it’s about finishing well.”
A Message for Aspiring 100-Miler Riders
Rick’s story is a testament to the idea that the King Price Race to the Sun is for everyone—whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or a complete beginner. “This event is accessible,” he says. “It’s flat, fast, and welcoming to riders of all levels. If I can do it, so can you.”
He also highlights the role of supporters in a cyclist’s journey. “The real heroes are the people who wake up early, pack snacks, carry spares, and cheer you on. My family, coach, and the MTB community have been my backbone.”
With its minimal elevation gain, well-graded gravel roads, and stunning scenery, the King Price Race to the Sun is designed to be fast, fun, and achievable for riders of all levels.
