The 2019 edition of Race to the Sun is 2 days away and preparations for the race are well on their way. This year’s event is definitely attracting more pro riders to the front end of the field, who will be competing for the acclaimed prize money of R20,000 for the top female and male rider.

We’ve asked a few of the pros what bikes they will be riding with and tips for first timers. Vanessa Bell needs to no introduction, she won the 2018 edition and will be back to defend her title.

Vanessa Bell

What bike will you be riding with on race day?

I will be riding a Specialized Diverge.

What is your finish time goal?

My finish time goal is basically not to be slower than last years’ time.

What advice do you have for a first time 100-miler?

My advice is to pace yourself form the start and not to push too hard in the beginning, eat small amounts consistently and drink plenty.

I really enjoyed the race last year and cannot wait for this year’s event. Last year was the first time I actually did such a distance.

What bike will you be riding with on race day?

I’ll be riding a Specialized Diverge Expert

How are preparations going for the race?

Training is going well. We’re racing a lot this time of year so form should be good.

What is your finish time goal?

Hopefully faster than the other people racing.

What advice do you have for a first time 100-miler?

If it is your first 100miler, just ride within yourself. You’ll feel good at the start but hold back as the day will get long. Also drink and eat regularly.
